How does sentinel work on fleas

Adult fleas ingest lufenuron when they bite your pet , but are not affected by it. However, the eggs they lay are malformed and within seven days of lufeneron being fed to an animal, virtually per cent of eggs fail to hatch. Of those few which do hatch, the larval stages fail to develop. In addition, lufenuron is excreted in the feces of adult fleas which have fed upon treated animals. When the feces drops onto the carpet and is consumed by developing larvae, it prevents them completing their molt, thus breaking the flea life cycle.

In order for Program to be effective as a sole flea control agent, all animals in the house must be treated. If one animal is left untreated, a flea simply needs to transfer to this pet and feed for three days and the effect of prior feeding on a Program-treated pet is completely lost.

As the product does not kill adult fleas, it may initially take some time to get fleas under control. They will continue to emerge from cocoons for 30 to 60 days after treatment has commenced; even longer in cooler areas. Novartis, the manufacturer, suggests that during the first four to six weeks of treatment it may be necessary to use the product in conjunction with another which effectively kills adult fleas.

After this time, if the animals go outside or mix with other pets, they will still be able to pick up adult fleas, but these will not be able to produce viable offspring. Program and Sentinel must be administered with a full meal to maximize absorption of the drug. If you purchase a 6 pack, that will last 1 dog for 6 months. You only need to use Sentinel Spectrum on your dog once a month.

You should not use Sentinel any more frequently then once a fortnight. If you notice your dog has fleas before the month is up, you are best to use a flea treatment such as Advantage, Frontline Plus or Capstar. Sentinel prevents heartworm infection. Controls roundworm, whipworm, hookworm and tapeworm. Prevents and controls fleas long-term.

Controls flea allergy dermatitis. One Sentinel tablet will treat all of these things for one month. Sentinel will control of flea infestations and flea allergy dermatitis in dogs for 1 month. But please note that Sentinel Spectrum will not kill adult fleas on dogs.

Sentinel is not effective against adult fleas, but prevents growth of the infestation on your pet. These adult fleas will still be able to feed on your pet and cause itching and discomfort. Another drug, usually nitenpyram, will have to be used to kill the adult fleas. Give the dose as soon as possible. If it is almost time for the next dose or you have missed many doses, skip the missed ones and continue with the regular monthly schedule.

Do not give your pet two doses at once. Notify your veterinarian that you missed a dose. It is not safe to use in cats. So to simplify for dogs even more: Trifexis prevents heartworms, the three major intestinal parasites hookworms, roundworms and whipworms and kills adult fleas. Sentinel prevents heartworms, the three major intestinal parasites hookworms, roundworms and whipworms , and stops flea reproduction. You may need to add NexGard or Frontline Tritak to kill adult fleas that hop onto your pet while you are in environments with fleas.

Since neither Trifexis nor Sentinel stop ticks, you will need to add one of the following to your monthly heartworm preventive one month before tick season begins and continuing until tick season ends.

While the main tick season in Western North Carolina runs from about March through July, we can see ticks year-round. Some environments such as woods and tall grasses provide a much greater exposure to ticks than others.
