In winter. In summer. Traveling in the Arctic is not cheap. Iceland and the more northerly reaches of other Scandinavian countries are also quite expensive. But making the trip to Greenland is absolutely worth the money. Basking in the Midnight Sun or the magical Northern Lights. Seeing icebergs , glaciers , colorful houses and Inuit culture. Dog sledding , skiing and snowshoeing , snowmobiling , sailing , whale watching , kayaking , and endless hiking trails await you if you make the journey.
The tourism industry in Greenland is still developing. Currently, there are a limited number of accommodation options and tour operators so it is best to book as much as you can as early as possible. In particular, if you are thinking about visiting Ilulissat in July-August, we advise you book at least 6 months prior to ensure you get your first preferences.
A large part of the expense of visiting Greenland is contained within the cost of the airfares. By booking your flights early, you may be able to score a good deal. There are several restrictions including a minimum stay of 7 days , but the tickets are much cheaper than their normal prices. It is also important to note that the checked luggage restriction for both Air Greenland and Air Iceland Connect is 20kg.
Make sure you stay under this limit as it is often strictly enforced and excess baggage fees are expensive. Greenland is an enormous country. In addition, there are a limited number of domestic flights each day, so the idea of just hopping on a plane to get to the next place does not work the same in Greenland as it does in other places. For these reasons, when planning your trip, you should limit yourself to just one or two areas. In particular, we recommend concentrating on just one area if your vacation is 7 days or less.
If you are planning to visit 2 or more areas, see if there is a way to make a round-trip. Although Kangerlussuaq is the main international airport, it is also possible to fly directly to Nuuk from Iceland all year round, and there are usually additional direct routes during the Summer from both Copenhagen and Iceland to Narsarsuaq and Ilulissat.
In each case, you arrive in Greenland at one location and depart from another. This saves significantly on airfares. You must do the following in order to enter Denmark or Iceland to transit to Greenland: All travellers 2 years of age and older, that have not previously been infected with COVID travelling to Greenland must show a negative PCR-test result, from a test taken a maximum of 72 hours prior to departure to Greenland.
The test must be performed at a hospital or health clinic, etc. If you, within 1 week prior to departure, have been informed that you have been exposed to infection due to close contact with an infected person, you must be pre-tested twice — 4 days after the contact and again another 2 days later Be aware that different entry rules apply depending on which country you have residence in, which country you are entering Denmark from, and whether you are fully vaccinated.

Here you can find travel and transit rules when travelling via Iceland. If you are fully vaccinated it is not required to quarantine or get re-tested upon arrival to Greenland. In Greenland you are considered fully vaccinated 14 days after the last vaccine shot. NB: In Denmark and Iceland the same definition for fully vaccinated applies. Fully-vaccinated persons can travel directly to all places without having to quarantine or re-test in Greenland.
One must be able to show proof of their vaccination status at any given time. Partially vaccinated and non-vaccinated persons 14 years of age and younger must go into 14 days quarantine, or stay in quarantine until receipt of a negative re-test result, which can be first conducted on day 5 after arrival. Children under 15 years of age that are not vaccinated, or only partially-vaccinated, must either quarantine for 14 days or quarantine until receiving negative results on a PCR re-test taken on the 5th day after arrival, at the earliest.
In Nuuk and Sisimiut, children who are 12 years of age or older that are not vaccinated are not permitted to be in certain public places. Alternatively, if a child is not fully vaccinated, one may gain access to public places by showing a negative PCR test result from a test taken maximum 48 hours prior to entry to the public place.
Or, if a child is not fully vaccinated yet has previously been infected with COVID, one can show a positive PCR test result that is at least 14 days old, but no more than 12 weeks old, at the time of entry to the public place.
Also valid through There is restricted access to public places in Nuuk and Sisimiut through 30 November. Public places include: restaurants, cafes, bars, dance clubs and similar; cultural institutions including culture houses, movie theatres, museums and exhibit halls; town halls, gathering halls and similar; libraries; indoor and outdoor sports facilities including sports halls, swimming pools, fitness centers and football pitches; hair salons, massage parlors, beauty clinics and similar.
The following persons are exempt from this restriction: employees of said public places, persons recommended to not be vaccinated, and children under 12 years of age. Persons under 15 years of age are exempt. In the event an unvaccinated or partially-vaccinated child years of age has purchased a ticket to Greenland prior to 3 September , this child is allowed to enter Greenland; however, the same travel restrictions apply as to those under 15 years of age that are not vaccinated, or only partially-vaccinated.
All fully-vaccinated persons are exempted from the quarantine and re-test requirements. In Greenland, you are considered fully vaccinated 14 days after the last vaccine shot. Fully-vaccinated persons can travel directly to both Open Places and Vulnerable Places without having to quarantine or re-test in Greenland. Partially vaccinated and non-vaccinated children under 15 years of age must do a day quarantine, or otherwise quarantine until receipt of negative test results from a COVID re-test taken on the 5th day after arrival to Greenland, at the earliest.

However, this does not apply to persons staying in a cabin or similar e. Once arrived at the accommodation, usage of a mask or visor is only mandatory for partially vaccinated and non-vaccinated persons during their quarantine period.
Children under 15 years of age are exempt. For partially vaccinated and non-vaccinated persons 15 years of age through 12 years of age, usage of a mask or visor is mandatory: During the entire quarantine period either until 14 days quarantine is completed or until receipt of a negative re-test result in Greenland when leaving your overnight accommodation, including when outdoors if one is not able to keep 2 metres distance from others, for example on the street on the way to buy basic necessary items.
Masks can be disposable masks or cloth masks that cover the nose and mouth, and which are attached with string, elastic, or the like behind the ears or behind the head and are snug around the face. A visor is a plastic screen that covers the nose and mouth, but does not close tightly around the face. This requirement on wearing a mask or visor does not include people who have reduced levels of consciousness, physical or mental impairment or anything else which might make one unable to wear a mask.
Masks or visors can be completely or partially removed for special reasons: During short-term consumption of food and drink, if this is allowed according to the rules of order while taking medication During conversation with mouth-reading persons If the mask or visor gives breathing difficulties or choking sensations If the police need to identify an individual You have to acquire and pay for your mask yourself. Fully vaccinated persons are not required to quarantine or re-test.
